A video showing police officers assaulting a Youth Congress leader inside a police station in Kerala’s Thrissur district has sparked outrage among party leaders.
The Congress party on Wednesday called for immediate disciplinary action against the cops involved in the incident. This comes following the emergence of CCTV footage capturing the assault, after a prolonged legal battle.
Reacting to the video, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Kerala asssembly, VD Satheesan said that the sight of the police brutally beating Youth Congress Mandal President Sujith is shocking to the conscience of Kerala.
The Congress leader dubbed the accused policemen as “a gang of criminals.” He also accused the ruling party in the state of “nurturing” them.
Satheesan Demands Sacking Of Accused Cops
“These policemen are a gang of criminals who do not hesitate to turn police stations into killing fields. Such gangs are nurtured by the CPIM and the gangs that control them,” Satheesan added.
He demanded that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan sack the accused policemen with immediate effect.
“The Chief Minister, who is in charge of the Home Department, also has a role in nurturing criminals in the police. Don’t you feel ashamed to say that these people work in your department? These beasts in khaki should not be kept in service even for a moment. Strict action should be taken,” Satheesan said.
According to news agency PTI, the incident occurred on April 5, 2023 at the Kunnamkulam police station.
The report suggests that the footage shows Sujith being physically attacked by at least five officers inside the station premises.
According to PTI report, the altercation began when Sujith tried to intervene as police allegedly threatened some of his friends standing near a roadside. He was then detained by officers, led by a Sub-Inspector, and transported to the station in a police jeep, during which, it is reported, his shirt was forcibly removed.
The video purportedly shows officers repeatedly hitting Sujith on his face and back inside the station. Despite claims by the police that Sujith was intoxicated and obstructing them, medical tests later confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol. A local court subsequently granted him bail.
A medical test also revealed that Sujith sustained partial hearing loss in one ear due to the alleged assault.
