Bharat Taxi is a cooperative-led cab service operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Ltd. (STCL) in collaboration with the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC). Unlike app-based ride-hailing platforms that charge commissions from drivers, Bharat Taxi follows a zero-commission model, allowing drivers to retain their earnings while also becoming co-owners of the platform.
Where has the service started?
The service is now operational across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad after trial runs were completed. Bharat Taxi began trial in Mumbai on May 25, followed by Pune on June 26, before being formally launched at Navi Mumbai International Airport on July 23.
How much does Bharat Taxi cost?
Bharat Taxi has announced fixed per-kilometre fares that remain unchanged throughout the day, except during designated peak hours.
Auto-rickshaw rides are priced at ₹18 per km, hatchbacks at ₹24 per km, sedans at ₹25 per km, and SUVs at ₹32 per km during non-peak hours. During peak hours (from 8:30 am to 10:30 am and 5:15 pm to 7:45 pm), the fares increase to ₹20 per km for auto-rickshaws, ₹26.4 per km for hatchbacks, ₹27.5 per km for sedans, and ₹35 per km for SUVs.
Is there surge pricing?
No. Bharat Taxi says it does not follow surge pricing, even during rain, festivals or periods of high demand. The only variation is a 10% increase during the designated morning and evening peak hours.
What about airport and intercity services?
In a conversation with The Indian Express, Mohit Mitra, city head of Bharat Taxi Pune, said that the company is working with airport authorities to set up airport pickup services. “Discussions are underway with airport officials to finalise a booth and deposit arrangement, with operations expected to begin soon from the Aeromall,” Mitra said.
It has also launched an intercity service between Pune and Mumbai. The fares are:Hatchback: ₹21 per km
Sedan: ₹23 per km
SUV: ₹30 per km
How is Bharat Taxi different?
According to the company, Bharat Taxi follows a zero-commission, cooperative ownership model, unlike many app-based cab aggregators. Around 35,000 drivers have already been onboarded, with fares finalised in consultation with drivers and aligned with Regional Transport Office (RTO) norms. The model is designed to provide predictable fares for passengers while helping drivers retain a larger share of their earnings.
