Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu inaugurated the service on Friday, June 25, according to official statement.
Under the Hub-and-Spoke model, passengers travelling internationally can complete check-in, immigration and customs formalities at their originating airport before boarding a domestic flight to a designated hub, such as Delhi, from where they continue their international journey.
The government said the initiative is part of its vision to make India the preferred aviation hub for Indian travellers by 2030 and a global aviation hub by 2047.
Speaking at the launch, Naidu said the new model would make international travel more accessible while strengthening India’s aviation ecosystem. “Our new hub-and-spoke model paves the way for a monumental shift in how our citizens travel—regardless of the city one lives in India, one can begin their international journey from their home city and travel across the globe with ease and confidence, on India’s own wings,” he said.
According to the PIB, improved international connectivity under the Hub-and-Spoke strategy is expected to boost trade, tourism, investment and regional economic development.
Ministry studies estimate the initiative could generate around 0.4 million direct and indirect jobs and contribute an additional $30 billion to India’s GDP by 2030. By 2047, the cumulative economic impact could support nearly 16 million jobs and add about $1.4 trillion to the economy.
The government said both the domestic and international legs under the model will be treated as international operations to ensure security and operational efficiency. Separate boarding passes will be issued for domestic and international passengers, while international travellers using the facility will not have access to customs declaration facilities at the hub airport.
