International travel: How visa rules shape destination choices

Visa rules are becoming a more important part of how Indian travellers plan international trips, with experts saying decisions are shaped not just by destination appeal, but also by ease of entry, connectivity and overall travel experience.

Industry voices note that visa convenience is now directly influencing how travellers choose destinations and when they travel.

Visa ease is now part of destination choice
According to Marloes Knippenberg, CEO of Kerten Hospitality, a multinational, mixed-use lifestyle operator, visa-free and easier-entry destinations are gaining traction, particularly among younger travellers looking for simpler and more flexible travel planning.

She added that interest is rising in destinations such as Kuwait and Morocco, among others, supported by simplified visa procedures and smoother entry processes.

It’s no longer just about exclusivity

Experts say destination decisions are no longer driven purely by exclusivity or traditional luxury markers.

“Exclusivity is part of the shift, but it is not the whole story,” said Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys, a travel technology platform.

“For many in this segment, factors like connectivity, visa ease and infrastructure are not afterthoughts. The aspiration has not changed. The criteria have.”

He added that travellers today are evaluating destinations more intentionally, balancing experience with practicality such as visa rules, infrastructure and overall trip feasibility.

What travellers should check before choosing emerging destinations

Experts say emerging destinations are visible through social media, creator-led travel and word-of-mouth discovery, but travellers should still evaluate core planning factors.

Nahta said key considerations include “connectivity, visa clarity, seasonality, infrastructure and total trip cost,” especially in destinations where tourism systems are still developing.

Visa ease is also changing how people travel

According to industry observers, simpler visa processes are also influencing how frequently and spontaneously people travel.

“Visa ease is also becoming important because it allows for more spontaneity. The easier a destination feels to access, the more attractive it becomes for last-minute, experience-led travel,” Nahta said.

Travel is shifting toward slower, more personal experiences

Beyond access, travellers are also changing how they experience destinations once they arrive.

Ruchi Kohli, Chief of the Experience at Away&Co, a boutique travel curation agency, said travellers are prioritising immersive and personalised journeys over conventional luxury formats.

She said many travellers are now opting for boutique stays, quieter destinations and longer itineraries, with greater focus on privacy, access and meaningful experiences.

Kohli also noted that while emerging destinations offer strong appeal, travellers should balance discovery with practicality, including infrastructure and ease of access, to ensure a smoother travel experience.
