Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday dismissed speculation of differences within the ruling Mahayuti alliance over the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mayor’s post, saying there was “no conflict” with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and that a decision would be taken after he returns to Mumbai.
Speaking to Moneycontrol on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Fadnavis said claims about Shiv Sena seeking a 2.5-year term for the mayor were “rumours”. “There is no problem. We fought the election together and there is no conflict. Once I go back to Mumbai, we will decide who will get the post,” he said.
Fadnavis also rejected reports of a phone call with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray over the mayor’s post, calling such claims baseless. “All this is rumour. For the post of mayor or any other post, we don’t have to fight because the people have given us a mandate,” he said.
Referring to the Mahayuti’s victory in the BMC polls, Fadnavis described the new dispensation as a “triple-engine government” with greater accountability. “It is a triple engine, but I would say it is also triple the responsibility. When you get such a big mandate, it gives you a chance to be more responsible and responsive to the needs of the people. Now that the initial joy has settled, I can feel the responsibility,” he told moneycontrol.
The BJP won 89 seats, while ally Shiv Sena secured 29, giving the alliance a narrow majority in the civic body.
Highlighting Maharashtra’s infrastructure push, Fadnavis said execution remains the state’s biggest strength. “If you look at the metro projects in Maharashtra, every single project has broken records,” he said, citing Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur metros. He added that a war-room approach and real-time monitoring have helped speed up projects.
Fadnavis said the government is planning an aggressive urban infrastructure drive, including tunnel networks in Mumbai and Pune, and reiterated the ambition of developing a ‘third Mumbai’ in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. “Our engagement here in Davos will be very useful in attracting investments for the third Mumbai,” he said, adding that international funds are being tapped for the project.
