The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday formally announced the schedule for the election of its next national president, with the process set to conclude on January 20.

The nomination window for the top organisational post will open on January 19. Following this, the name of the new party chief will be declared on January 20, as per the circular released by BJP national returning officer K Laxman.

As per the schedule, nominations can be filed between 2 pm and 4 pm on January 19. The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place between 4 pm and 5 pm the same day, while candidates may withdraw their nominations between 5 pm and 6 pm.

BJP national working president Nitin Nabin is likely to be elected unopposed, as there is little indication of any other leader entering the contest, news agency PTI reported, citing party sources.

It has been learnt that senior party leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is believed to be backing Nabin’s candidature.
