The Congress found itself in an embarrassing situation after its workers reportedly sang the national anthem incorrectly during the party’s 140th foundation day celebrations in Kerala on Sunday.
The event was attended by several senior leaders, including former Defence Minister AK Antony.
The incident took place at the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram. As party leaders prepared to sing the national anthem, the lead singer mistakenly began with “Jana-gana-mangala-dayaka jaya he” instead of the correct opening line, “Jana-gana-mana-adhinayaka jaya he.”

A video capturing the wrong recitation of the national anthem soon circulated on social media, drawing sharp criticism.
The error occurred in the presence of many senior party leaders, including VM Sudheeran, PC Vishnunadh MLA and AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunsi.
Despite the incorrect rendition, none of the leaders present intervened or sought to stop or correct the lyrics. They continued to sing the flawed version.
The episode has revived memories of a similar incident earlier this year, when the national anthem was also rendered incorrectly at another Congress function attended by senior leaders. That incident, too, had gone viral and drawn widespread criticism.
The incident caused embarrassment for the party as television channels broadcast visuals of the incorrect rendition. The Congress Party’s Foundation Day celebrations were held across the state, featuring flag hoisting ceremonies. The Congress leadership has not issued any immediate response regarding the latest controversy.
