The Congress Party on Friday claimed that its national president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi have not been invited to the President’s banquet being hosted this evening in honour of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is on a two-day state visit to India.

According to party sources, Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, meanwhile, has received an invitation for the dinner.

Tharoor, a former United Nations under-secretary-general with extensive diplomatic experience, is understood to have been invited in view of his long-standing engagement with Russian diplomacy, sources said.

President Droupadi Murmu will host a state banquet for Russian President Vladimir Putin this evening at Rashtrapati Bhawan, continuing a long-standing tradition of honouring visiting heads of state with a ceremonial dinner at the presidential palace.

Tharoor recently led a multi-party delegation to relevant world capitals to highlight India’s stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and its zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism following Operation Sindoor.

He had emerged as one of the most articulate voices to present India’s position during Operation Sindoor as well as its diplomatic offensive against Pakistan at the global stage following the Pahalgam attack

The senior Congress leader has often publicly backed PM Modi at several occasions. Earlier in June this year, Tharoor, in an article, remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remain a “prime asset” for India on the global stage but deserve greater backing.

Tharoor said the diplomatic outreach following ‘Operation Sindoor’ was a moment of national resolve and effective communication.

Later, the Prime Minister’s Office shared Tharoor’s article on X and wrote, “Lok Sabha MP and former Union Minister Dr. Shashi Tharoor writes- Lessons from Operation Sindoor’s global outreach.”
