Congress leader Pawan Khera on Friday launched a blistering attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his promise to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) if he returns to power after the next elections. Responding sharply, Pawan Khera dismissed Chief Minister Sarma’s assurance, predicting that Sarma would not be in a position to implement any such policy.

“First of all, he will not return to power. He will go to jail after the election. He knows it…,” Khera told reporters in Guwahati.

Khera further argued that the idea of a uniform code runs contrary to India’s cultural fabric, stating, “This country is a collection of several belief systems, several customs, several traditions, several languages. You can’t try and impose one language, one system, one belief and one faith on everyone.”

On Thursday, the Assam assembly passed a bill to ban polygamy, making it an offence that may lead to a maximum of 10 years of imprisonment, barring some exceptions. Terming the development a step closer to the UCC, CM Sarma declared the UCC will be implemented in Assam if he becomes the CM again after the assembly polls slated for next year.

The bill, which will be sent to the President for her assent, kept people belonging to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category and areas under the Sixth Schedule out of the purview of the legislation.
