The death of a teenager in Mumbai’s Thane has now become political with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing Uddhav and Raj Thackeray of sowing the seeds of language politics in Maharashtra. A teenager committed suicide on Tuesday after he was thrashed by a group of four to five people for not speaking Marathi.

The victim, identified as 19-year-old Arnav Laxman Khaire, was travelling in a local train to his college in Mulund on Tuesday when he asked a fellow passenger in Hindi to move forward. The passenger then reprimanded him for failing to speak in Marathi, and the dispute subsequently escalated.

Taking to X, BJP leader Ameet Satam wrote, “Hey look, Uddhav and Raj Thackeray. Do you know what consequences are arising from the poison you’re sowing in society? The Marathi man will teach a lesson to your duplicitous and hypocritical policies. Remember…!

This is not the first case where non-Marathi-speaking people have been assaulted in Maharashtra. In fact, in recent months, a number of incidents have been reported in which members of Raj Thackeray’s MNS and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena harass and assault locals for not speaking Marathi.

Mumbai Teen Dies By Suicide

In a shocking incident, a teenager in the Tisgaon Naka area of Thane’s Kalyan East near Mumbai died by suicide after being thrashed for not speaking Marathi.

Arnav Laxman Khaire, a first-year science student, was travelling to his college in Mulund on Tuesday when he asked a fellow passenger in Hindi to move forward, as per reports. His father, Jeetendra Khaire, said a group of 4-5 passengers confronted him over not speaking Marathi and proceeded to brutally thrash him.

In a state of shock, Arnav got off at Thane and took another train to Mulund. According to the victim’s father, Arnav came under significant mental stress after the assault and was unable to focus on his studies. He left college early and returned home in the afternoon and told his father about the incident.

When the father returned home from work in the evening, he found the door locked from the inside. After opening it with the help of neighbours, he found his son hanging in the bedroom. Arnav was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
