Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor on Thursday observed a vow of silence (maun vrat) at the Bhitiharwa Gandhi Ashram in Bihar, a symbolic act he announced after his party failed to open its account in the Assembly elections. Kishor, who has spent the last three years building Jan Suraaj as an alternative political platform in the state, described the silence as an “atonement” for not being able to convince voters of his vision for change.
The act came on a day when Nitish Kumar was sworn in as Chief Minister for a historic tenth time in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several NDA leaders. Kishor had earlier said he would spend November 20 in silent reflection at the ashram, vowing to redouble his efforts. “I will work twice as hard… There’s no turning back until I fulfil my resolve to make Bihar better,” he said at a press conference earlier this week.
Kishor also admitted that he “failed to explain to the people of Bihar” the basis on which they should vote for a new political system. “We may have made mistakes, but we have not committed any crime,” he added while announcing the silent fast.
The NDA swept the Assembly polls, with the BJP emerging as the single-largest party with 89 seats and the JD(U) close behind at 85. Jan Suraaj, contesting its first election, failed to win a single seat. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan, a venue that has witnessed several defining political moments, including Jayaprakash Narayan’s call for “total revolution” in 1974.
The event was attended by several NDA Chief Ministers, including those of Haryana, Assam, Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, along with Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and LJP (RV) chief Chirag Paswan.
