Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on the heels of the first phase of voting in Bihar, told News18 that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is on track to win “more than 160 seats” and to improve on its last victory.

“Our assessment is 160 seats, and we will go even beyond that,” Shah said. “Last time, we won with a majority, and this time too, we will win with an even bigger majority.”

The minister also framed one of the BJP campaign’s central issues as migration and citizenship claims in border districts. Speaking about Seemanchal, the north-eastern belt of Bihar bordering West Bengal and Nepal, Shah said the people there “want an infiltrator-free state”. He insisted that voter-list corrections will continue, and argued those whose names are removed are not Indian citizens.

“Those who are not Indian citizens… their names will be cut,” Shah told News18. “Rahul and Lalu want to save them; that will not happen.”

The home minister had earlier too called out Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his opposition to the voter list revision in Bihar, saying he had been campaigning for “ghuspaithiya” (illegal immigrants).

“BJP supports the special intensive revision exercise to cleanse electoral rolls. Rahul baba ‘ghuspaithiya bachao’ rally nikaal rahe hain (Rahul Gandhi is taking out rallies in support of infiltrators). I want people to recognise such people and parties that want infiltrators to remain on voter lists so that they can win elections with the help of infiltrators,” Shah had said.

“I am confident that people of Bihar will celebrate real Diwali on November 14, when the poll results will be announced. The RJD and its alliance partners will witness a humiliating defeat,” the home minister said.
