Over a month after a deadly stampede took place in Karur, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay returned to the public stage on Wednesday and addressed the party’s general council meeting.

Senior leaders and district-level office-bearers attended the session, during which 12 resolutions were formally adopted on subjects including public safety, environmental protection, agricultural distress, and electoral processes.

The first resolution, read out by Karur District Secretary Mathiazhagan — who has been named in the FIR related to the Karur incident — offered condolences to stampede victims, describing the tragedy as “a conspiracy and an unimaginable tragedy.”

TVK also took aim at the state government’s handling of women’s safety, condemning the Coimbatore gang rape of a college student and insisting that the administration ensure the strictest punishment. The resolution accused the ruling party of “failing in law and order” and “putting women’s safety at risk,” further asking whether the Chief Minister would “wake up from his slumber.”

The party’s resolutions extended criticism to the Union government as well, particularly over the repeated detentions of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. TVK sought firmer action from the Centre to safeguard their livelihood and rights.

Another resolution rejected the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, pointing to “bulk removal of voters” in Bihar and stating that it is “improper to conduct SIR in haste when a case is pending before the Supreme Court.”

Concerning farmers, TVK accused the DMK government of allowing significant losses during paddy procurement in the Delta region following heavy rains, alleging that the administration’s “inaction led to a 20 lakh tonne loss.” The party pressed for compensation to the affected farming community.

Highlighting issues in Chennai’s civic infrastructure, one of the resolutions noted that the North-East monsoon had “exposed incomplete stormwater drains”* and urged the government to fast-track the Rs 4,000-crore drainage project.

TVK further opposed the approval for a high-rise building at the Pallikaranai Ramsar site, describing the location as an ecologically fragile zone requiring preservation.

Raising concerns over massive crowds at TVK events, the party sought “adequate security for the party chief and supporters who come to meet him without bias at all campaigns.”

The resolutions also took a swipe at the ruling party, branding the DMK a “publicity-driven government” and accusing its IT wing of “spreading disinformation and defaming the TVK chief.”

Further, the TVK asked the state government to issue a comprehensive white paper on foreign investments, industrial projects, and employment generation, indirectly referencing Foxconn’s recent rejection of investment claims attributed to Tamil Nadu.

During the meeting, the party officially announced that its founder and president Vijay will be the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
