Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday praised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for invoking India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in his victory speech.
Addressing a public rally in Valmiki Nagar in poll-bound Bihar, the Wayanad MP said Mamdani spoke about Nehru while BJP leaders abuse the former prime minister.
“They keep abusing Jawaharlal Nehru, blaming him for every single flaw. Today, an American person (Zohran Mamdani) has won the election, and he spoke about Jawaharlal Nehru. And here, BJP leaders are abusing him,” Priyanka Gandhi said.

Mamdani, the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, registered a decisive and historic win, defeating Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and political heavyweight former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate.
Mamdani referred to Nehru’s “Tryst with Destiny” speech, which he delivered on the eve of India’s independence, August 14, 1947, to the Constituent Assembly.
Mamdani said, “Standing before you, I’m reminded of Jawaharlal Nehru’s words: ‘A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.’ Tonight, New York has done just that.”
