The sharp remarks by the BJP were in response to Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s earlier remarks after a medical college student was gang-raped outside her campus in Durgapur.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after she congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team for their historic win in the ICC cricket. The BJP quoted Banerjee’s X post and wrote, “OMG, they were playing till 12! But you had told them to be home by 8!!”.
The post was a sharp dig at Banerjee’s remarks after the gang rape of a medical student outside her campus in Durgapur in October.
“She was studying in a private medical college… all the private medical are whose responsibility? how they came out in the night at 12:30?… it happened, so far I know, in the forest area… investigation is on,” the Bengal CM had said.

From political leaders to cricketers, everyone hailed the women’s team, as the country joined in celebrating the milestone.
Prime MInister Narendra Modi on Monday also began his address at the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2025, by lauding the team.
“This is India’s first Women’s World Cup. I congratulate our women’s cricket team. We are proud of you. Your success will inspire millions of young people across the country,” he said.
