Union Minister and LJP (R) chief Chirag Paswan defended the government’s handling of crime following the arrest of JDU’s Mokama candidate Anant Singh in the murder of Jan Suraaj supporter Dular Chand Yadav in Mokama, saying the action shows authorities are not shielding wrongdoers.

“If our government were protecting criminals, the action that took place last night would not have happened. Our government is very clear on one point — as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Ji always says, we neither protect anyone nor falsely implicate anyone. This is part of a judicial process,” Paswan told reporters.

Describing the incident as “indeed unfortunate,” he rejected any suggestion of selective treatment. “I completely disagree with the notion that ‘your crime is lesser than mine, or my crime is lesser than yours’. That doesn’t mean it’s not a crime. Even a single such incident is a matter of concern — and it is a matter of concern for our government as well,” he said.

Paswan added a warning to potential offenders: “I can assure you this much: whoever is found guilty will not be spared. The strictest possible action will be taken against every culprit.”

Meanwhile, RJD leader and Mahagathbandhan chief ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that there was a ‘maha jungle raj’ in the state following the arrest of Anant Singh.

Responding to the attacks by PM Modi and the BJP over the RJD’s lawlessness during its 15-year-old tenure, Tejashwi Yadav claimed that the Prime Minister was not able to see the “deteriorating” law and order.

“This was bound to happen after the events that unfolded. The Prime Minister is visiting Patna for a roadshow today. Crimes have been committed in many places. Doesn’t he see this?” he told reporters.

“A father and a son were recently found murdered in Ara and Rohtas. There isn’t a single day without gunfire. A situation of a ‘maha jungle raj’ has been created,” he said.

Bihar, which has 243 Assembly polls, will vote in the first phase on November 6. The second phase will be held on November 11 and the results will be announced on November 14.
