A crucial meeting of the West Bengal State BJP is scheduled to take place in Kolkata on Friday. Senior party leaders, including Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav and National General Secretary (Organisation) Sunil Bansal, are expected to attend. The meeting will primarily focus on election strategy and the ongoing awareness campaign on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
According to sources, the BJP plans to set up around 700 awareness camps across the border districts of West Bengal to inform people about the provisions of the CAA. The decision follows a detailed brainstorming session held in Kolkata on Wednesday, which was attended by BL Santosh and Sunil Bansal. Party sources told News18 that the BJP will now intensify its focus on these camps.
Purpose of the CAA Camps
The primary aim of these camps is to assist people with CAA registration and clear misconceptions surrounding the law, especially in relation to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Many residents reportedly have doubts about how the CAA and SIR are linked, and party functionaries said these awareness camps will help clarify such issues.
Sources said that the BJP wants to ensure that people, particularly Hindu refugees who migrated to India due to religious persecution, understand that they will not be deported. “This message must reach everyone,” a senior leader said, adding that “the camps are meant to reassure the persecuted Hindu communities who have come to Bengal over the past decade that they are safe here.”
BJP’s state president Shamik Bhattacharya emphasised the humanitarian aspect of the initiative, saying: “We have always believed that Hindus facing persecution in other countries should get refuge in India. That’s precisely why these camps are so important.”
Party Directives Finalised in the Meeting
According to sources, during the internal meeting, the BJP leadership decided on several key directives for its state and district-level functionaries:
- The number of CAA awareness camps must be significantly increased.
- District leaders and MLAs will be held responsible for implementing the directives effectively.
- Any form of protest or resistance to the campaign should be countered firmly.
- The central leadership has shared two contact numbers for party workers to report any issues encountered on the ground.
A monthly report on the progress and challenges of the campaign must be submitted to the central leadership.
Focus on Border Districts
Party insiders say that the BJP’s renewed emphasis on CAA outreach in border districts is part of its broader strategy to consolidate support ahead of the elections. The camps are expected to play a key role in strengthening the party’s connect with refugee communities and shaping public perception about the CAA’s intent and implementation.
