Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay on Tuesday challenged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin not to target his party workers following the deadly stampede at a rally he led in Karur.
In his first public message after the tragedy on September 27, which claimed 41 lives and injured nearly 60, Vijay said in a video posted on social media, “CM sir, if you have a thought of seeking vengeance, you may do anything to me and not touch the party men.”
Vijay added, “You may do anything to me,” as senior party leaders including TVK state general secretary Bussy N Anand and deputy general secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar face police cases linked to the incident.
Vijay claimed he left the rally venue in Karur early on the day of the tragedy to avoid further chaos and ensure public safety. He said he had not visited the victims or their families yet, as his presence could create “an unusual situation,” but assured he would meet them soon.
The actor’s remarks come after two TVK office bearers were sent to 14 days’ judicial custody on Tuesday. Police confirmed that Karur West District Secretary VP Mathiyalagan and Karur Central District Secretary Kasi Pounraj have been named in the First Information Report (FIR) and remanded.
Bussy Anand and Nirmal Kumar, also named in the FIR, have not been arrested yet, according to the police.
The accused have been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), Section 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), Section 125 (endangering life of others), and Section 223 (disobedience to order).uy
The Tamil Nadu government has also formed a one-member commission, led by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan, to investigate the stampede at the TVK rally.
