A row has erupted in Punjab after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) initiated disciplinary action against several staff members of Gurudwara Smadh Baba Budha Sahib in Ramdas, Amritsar. The action came after a siropa (robe of honour) was presented to Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, during his recent visit to the shrine while touring flood-affected areas in Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts.
The SGPC, citing violation of maryada (religious code of conduct), suspended a preacher and an attendant, dismissed a granthi from service, and issued a warning with transfer orders to the gurdwara manager. SGPC Secretary Partap Singh, in a statement, said that the inquiry was conducted under the direction of SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami.
“After receiving the inquiry report, appropriate action was taken against the responsible staff members. In this regard, kathavachak (preacher) Bhai Palwinder Singh and sewadar (attendant) Bhai Harwinder Singh have been suspended, while the temporary services of granthi Bhai Kulwinder Singh have been terminated. In addition, Manager Pargat Singh has been issued a warning and transferred,” Singh said.

The move has drawn sharp criticism from Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who expressed strong displeasure over the SGPC’s decision. “It is sad, shocking and unfortunate that the SGPC has taken action against the officials of the Gurdwara Budha Sahib Ji for presenting siropa to Shri Rahul Gandhi Ji. Don’t understand what is the motive of the present SGPC dispensation to show such hostility towards Rahul Ji, who has been fighting for the country particularly for the religious minorities like Sikhs,” Warring remarked.
