Congress leader Pawan Khera on Thursday slammed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for commenting on an ongoing probe into alleged links between his party MP Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan.

Speaking to ANI, Khera questioned Sarma’s role in the matter, saying the chief minister seemed to be trying to influence the investigation.

“Who is the Chief Minister to interfere? Let the report come out? Does he (Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma) want to influence the report?” Khera said.

He further added, “Does he want to manipulate the report? What is he doing? Is anybody afraid of this Chief Minister? He is an outgoing Chief Minister.”

His remarks came a day after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Assam government submitted its report to the chief minister.

On Wednesday, Sarma posted a statement on X, claiming the probe had uncovered “startling facts” pointing to a broader conspiracy to harm India’s sovereignty. He also claimed the investigation had found involvement of a British national, married to an Indian MP, in the alleged activities of Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh.

Sarma added that the report indicated Pakistan’s interior ministry had helped arrange a visit for an MP from Assam to Pakistan. He did not name the MP but has previously accused Gogoi, the Assam Congress president, of travelling to Pakistan under suspicious circumstances.

“The Assam Government will now examine the report of the SIT in detail and place it before the State Cabinet. Once the matter is discussed in the Cabinet, the information gathered during the enquiry will be made public,” he added.

The SIT, formed in February, includes senior officers Munna Prasad Gupta, Rosie Kalita, Pranabjyoti Goswami, and Maitrayee Deka. It was tasked with investigating Sheikh’s alleged anti-India activities, Hindustan Times reported.

Gogoi has denied all allegations, calling the entire episode a politically motivated smear campaign. He confirmed that he had visited Pakistan in 2013, when his wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, was working there on a climate change project. However, he dismissed any suggestion of links to Pakistani authorities.

“This issue is nothing but an attempt to malign me. It’s like a C-grade movie that will flop once the SIT report is out,” the Congress leader had said earlier.
