Sanju Samson reacts to Sanju Samson’s selection in Playing XI
India captain Suryakumar Yadav had one of the most amusing press briefings on Tuesday when all 8 captains gathered in Dubai at the Asia Cup Trophy unveiling. The premium continental championship kickstarts on September 9 with Afghanistan taking on Hong Kong, China in the tournament opener. Ahead of the game, the captains spoke to the media and shared insights about their teams’ preparations.
Suryakumar was asked about the Indian team management’s approach regarding Sanju Samson ahead of the tournament. Questions have been raised over the wicketkeeper-batter’s place in the playing XI ever since Shubman Gill was included in the squad and named vice-captain.
Although Samson enjoyed considerable success as an opener last year, his spot now appears uncertain, especially since his numbers in the middle order haven’t been convincing, adding to the doubts over his selection.
But the Indian captain assured that good care will be taken of Samson in the tournament.
“Main aapko playing XI message kar deta hun ( I shall text you the playing XI),” Suryakumar quipped.
“We are actually taking really good care of him. Don’t worry, we will make the right decision tomorrow,” he added.
While the other participants are coming into the tournament with optimum game time, India last played a T20I series in January. However, speaking of preparedness, Suryakumar said his teammates haven’t played together but had a good time in the IPL.
“As a team, we played a series together in Jan-Feb. But the boys had a good time in the IPL. So the format was going on. Yeah, but we haven’t played a tournament together after June. But that’s how this tournament is. We accept the challenge, and let’s see how things go from tomorrow,” the Indian captain said.
India will begin their Asia Cup campaign from September 10 against the UAE in Dubai.
