Every year, Apple’s iPhone launch is met with great anticipation across India. But have you ever wondered which cities in India actually purchase the most iPhones? One might assume Delhi, Bengaluru, or Hyderabad would top the list; however, the real leader is Maharashtra.

One In Four iPhones Sold In Maharashtra

According to a recent report by Tata’s electronics retail chain Croma, more than 25% of all iPhones sold in India between September 2024 and August 2025 were purchased in Maharashtra. This includes major cities such as Mumbai and Pune, as well as other parts of the state.

Gujarat came in second, accounting for 11% of sales, while the National Capital Region (Delhi) followed with 10%.

Indian Buyers Favour Practical Choices Over Flashy Upgrades

Beyond sales volumes, the data also offers insight into consumer preferences across the country. It appears that practicality outweighs showmanship when it comes to iPhone purchases in India.

  • Around 86% of buyers opted for the standard iPhone models, rather than the high-end Pro versions.
  • In terms of size, the standard models far outsold the larger Plus or Pro Max variants.
  • When choosing storage, 128GB emerged as the most popular, followed by 256GB.
  • Very few customers opted for the expensive 512GB or 1TB options, signalling that most prefer adequate capacity without overspending.

Classic Colours Still Dominate

Despite Apple introducing fresh colour variants with each launch, Indian customers seem to prefer the classics. Black remained the most popular choice, followed by blue and white.

This suggests a strong preference for a clean, timeless look over eye-catching novelty.

iPhone Upgrade Cycle: Every 5 Years

The report also reveals an emerging trend in upgrade habits:

  • According to the report, 1 in 5 customers is now replacing their old iPhone with a newer model.
  • Many are also opting for AppleCare protection plans, reflecting growing awareness of device longevity and after-sales service.

All Eyes On iPhone 17

As Apple unveils the iPhone 17 on September 9, 2025, it remains to be seen how Indian customers will respond to its latest features. However, one thing is clear: style, reliability, and practicality are at the heart of purchasing decisions in India.
