After decades of anticipation, Tamil cinema’s biggest icons are set to share the screen once again. Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, two legends of Indian cinema, are reportedly reuniting for a film after an extraordinary gap of 46 years. The project is said to be helmed by hitmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj. The two actors last collaborated in the late 1970s and early 1980s, appearing together in several memorable films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and even Hindi cinema.

At the recently concluded SIIMA 2025 in Dubai, filmmaker Suhasini Mani Ratnam, who is also Kamal Haasan’s niece, talked about the bond between the two icons. Describing them as “brothers,” she spoke up on the deep respect and friendship that has endured between Rajinikanth and Kamal for decades.

“So they are actually like brothers,” she said. Suhasini also revealed that they check up on each other, stating, “Sometimes, if he (Kamal) ever gets into an accident while shooting, Rajini sir will call me and say, is Kamal hurting?” If I say yes, he replies, if Kamal says it hurts, it really must be hurting because he never complains. They are very close like that.”

Speculation around a Rajinikanth–Kamal Haasan reunion has been swirling ever since Rajinikanth playfully hinted at the idea during the launch event of his upcoming film Coolie. At the time, the superstar remarked that he initially thought Kamal, who stars in Thug Life, had been brought in for a cameo role.

Those whispers grew louder when Kamal himself addressed the possibility at the SIIMA 2025 ceremony in Dubai. Without directly confirming details, he acknowledged the excitement surrounding the rumours and offered a characteristically witty take. “We don’t know if it’s a Tharamana Sambavam (wonderful occurrence), but it’s good if the audience likes it. If they’re happy, we’ll like it. Otherwise, we’ll continue trying. This was long coming. We were separate because they gave one biscuit to both of us. But the half biscuit makes us both happy, so we’ll come together,” Kamal said, drawing cheers from the audience.

The veteran actor made it clear that there has never been a rivalry between the two. “It is you all who thought/created the competition. We don’t have any competition between us. It’s important that we got the chance to do this. He is like that, so am I. It might be a surprise, business-wise, but we feel at least now it’s happening. We always wanted to produce each other’s films,” he added.

Kamal and Rajinikanth have worked together in films like Apoorva Raagangal, Anthuleni Katha, Moondru Mudichu, Avargal, Thappu Thalangal, Ninaithale Inikkum and Thillu Mullu.

Rajinikanth most recently appeared in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s action entertainer Coolie, while Kamal Haasan was last seen headlining Mani Ratnam’s much-talked-about project Thug Life.
