The Election Commission on Tuesday issued a notice to senior Congress leader Pawan Khera for allegedly registering himself in the electoral roll of more than one assembly constituency in Delhi.
The notice was shared by the District Election Officer (DEO) of New Delhi on social media platform X, along with a copy of the official order. The Congress leader has been directed to respond to the notice by 11am on September 8.
“Notice to Shri Pawan Khera for getting himself registered in Electoral Roll of more than one constituency,” the DEO’s post read, attaching the formal communication.
According to the notice, Khera is listed as a voter in both the New Delhi and Jangpura assembly constituencies.
The DEO reminded Khera that holding multiple voter registrations is a punishable offence under the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
“You are therefore, directed to show cause as to why action should not be taken against you under said Act,” the notice added.
Khera Hits Back
Shortly after the notice became public, Khera responded on X, accusing the Election Commission of acting in favour of the ruling BJP.
In a strongly worded post, he wrote that while genuine complaints from the Congress regarding alleged voter fraud are often ignored, the EC is quick to act against opposition leaders.
“While our complaints of Vote Chori are disregarded, the EC rushes to act against opposition members,” Khera noted.
He questioned why no notice had been issued over the alleged discovery of 1,00,000 fake voters in Karnataka’s Mahadevapura constituency, a case earlier brought into light by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
“Why did the @ECISVEEP not issue a single notice to the 1,00,000 fake voters of Mahadevapura constituency, that were exposed by @RahulGandhi ? We will not stop exposing the EC’s wrongdoings in the Bihar SIR and other election processes,” the Congress leader added.
