The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday appointed Andheri (West) MLA Ameet Satam as president of its Mumbai unit ahead of crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis said that the BJP will reclaim power in the BMC under Satam’s leadership.

Fadnavis said during the Maharashtra assembly polls last year, the party recorded a significant victory and asserted its dominance in Mumbai under the leadership of (outgoing) city unit chief Ashish Shelar.

“With Shelar having taken on ministerial responsibilities in the cabinet, it was necessary to appoint a new president for the Mumbai unit. Following discussions at the state-level led by (Maharashtra BJP) president Ravindra Chavan and senior leaders, Ameet Satam has been chosen for the post,” he said.

The CM further said that with the backing of senior leaders from Mumbai and the state, he expects the BJP to set new records in the city civic body polls.

Addressing the press conference, Satam said he would give importance to Mumbaikars’ safety, especially in light of “attempts to change the city’s identity”.

“The safety and security of Mumbaikars is our top priority. While the city continues to develop, our focus will be on ensuring the well-being and protection of its citizens. We will work towards hoisting the Mahayuti’s saffron flag atop the BMC and ensuring that a Mahayuti mayor is elected,” he added, as reported by The Indian Express.

Satam also alleged that Rs 3 lakh crore of corruption has been committed in the BMC from 1997 to 2022. “The BJP will make every effort to free the civic body from the clutches of corruption and ensure transparency and accountability in civic administration,” he added.
