Amid speculation over statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah set the internet ablaze by sharing a Harry Potter meme on Tuesday.

Featuring the character of Potions master Severus Snape from the beloved series, the text accompanying the visuals said: “Please I can’t take anymore of this.”

Abdullah’s post on X got the internet talking, with many asking him the meaning behind the cryptic meme while others asked the AI, Grok, to explain what it is about.

“Statehood?” one user asked while another said: “No statehood. Sit down and enjoy the mayorship.” (sic)

One user asked: “Why other CMs are not as cool as him ?”. Another said: “No statehood bt administration rules.” (sic)

At the time of writing this report, Abdullah did not clarify what his post was about, further fuelling speculation especially since it came shortly after at least two media outlets reported that the central government could move a Bill related to J&K’s statehood in Parliament on Wednesday (August 20).

To be sure, there was no official word on this. News18 could not independently verify the development.

On August 5, 2019, the Union government split the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir with a legislative assembly, and Ladakh without one.

The government and top ministers have said J&K statehood will be restored when the time is right. The Supreme Court, too, had asked the government to restore J&K’s statehood at the earliest. It had earlier upheld the Centre’s August 5 decision to nullify Article 370, which gave special status to the region.

The restoration of statehood and special status is an emotive issue in J&K, and several political parties and activists in the Kashmir valley have been vocal in their demand to roll back the milestone move that made international headlines and sparked protests.

Last year, in an election held after a decade, the National Conference-Congress alliance came to power in J&K. Omar Abdullah of the NC has called for the early restoration of statehood.

‘PAID A POLITICAL PRICE’

A few days ago, in a fiery Independence Day speech, Abdullah said he was paying a political price for pinning his hopes on India’s democracy and the Centre for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s rights, including statehood.

He said he took a big political risk when he took a stand that J&K will get whatever it needs from democracy and that nothing can be achieved through a confrontation with the government.

“Probably, I have paid a political price for it,” he said, referring to recent speculation that statehood reinstatement will be announced on Independence Day.

He said though he did not have much expectations, he was led to believe that it might happen after all.

“I had no expectations but I was being constantly told that the documents are ready and now just the announcement is to be made. But the announcement never came. The ray of hope is fading, but we will not give up,” he added.
