Brad Pitt is grieving the loss of his beloved mother, Jane Pitt, who passed away at the age of 84. Jane, a retired school counselor, raised Brad and his siblings – Doug and Julie – in Springfield, Missouri, alongside their father, William Pitt, a former trucking company owner. Though the family kept a low profile, Jane occasionally stepped into the public eye to support her Oscar-winning son, attending red carpets including the 2012 Oscars and the 2014 premiere of Unbroken, directed by then-daughter-in-law Angelina Jolie.
On Wednesday, August 6, Brad’s niece Sydney — Doug’s daughter — shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. Calling Jane “the biggest heart,” she wrote, “My sweet Grammy, we were not ready for you to go yet but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier.”
Sydney added, “She could keep up with all 14 of us grandkids without missing a beat. There was no limit to the love she gave, and everyone who met her felt it. I don’t know how we move forward without her.”
Jane Pitt was not only a dedicated mother and grandmother but also a passionate supporter of children’s health. In 2009, Brad and his siblings donated $1 million to open the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center in Missouri. The facility brought the region its first pediatric oncologist and hematologist, demonstrating the family’s commitment to meaningful change.
Even as recently as June 2025, Brad Pitt paid tribute to his mom during a press interview for his film F1. Speaking to Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, he smiled and said, “I gotta say hi to my mom because she watches you every morning. To Jane Pitt. Love you, Mom,” before blowing a kiss on camera.
Jane’s deep impact on her children’s lives was evident in a 2018 video for WorldServe International. “I’m very proud of all my children,” she said. “They see a need and try to step in and fill it… It’s an amazing thing.”
