The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday lashed out at Samajwadi Party MP ST Hasan, who stirred a fresh controversy over the recent flash floods in Uttarkashi, calling it “divine justice” as other religions were not being respected in the state.

Speaking to IANS, Hasan said, “It’s a truly heart-wrenching incident. A whole village has been washed away. Earlier, it didn’t rain like this there. Why are such tragedies happening? We need to reflect on this. We’ve cut down too many trees.”

“In Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, other religions are not being respected. There is someone who governs this world, and when divine justice happens, no one can protect themselves. Bulldozers should not be used on any dargahs or temples. It’s better to evacuate such places peacefully,” he added.

BJP Slams Hasan’s Remarks

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing criticism of Hasan’s remarks, calling them divisive, baseless, and politically-motivated. “What a Disgrace! Former SP MP ST Hasan communalises a natural tragedy — insults Hindus & downplays the suffering of Uttarkashi’s Dharali villagers after the cloudburst. For Samajwadi Party, even death & disaster are filtered through Hindu–Muslim lenses,” said BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari.

BJP MP from Delhi, Praveen Khandelwal, said, “What he said is completely baseless. A natural disaster can occur anywhere, and it is absolutely wrong to say that any religion is not being respected.”

Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also condemned the remark. “While the people of the nation are praying for the well-being of those affected, some are busy offering curses. They are giving absurd arguments like, this disaster happened because of one reason or another. What is happening in Palestine? What is happening in Iraq? Why are you giving such illogical arguments?”

Earlier, flash floods and landslides earlier this week claimed multiple lives in Uttarkashi and left behind a trail of destruction. At least 729 people have been evacuated from parts of the disaster-hit Dharali area that are still cut off following mudslides and flash floods on Tuesday.

The district administration has confirmed four deaths, and 49 people have been missing since the disaster. Four helicopters of Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Authority have begun making sorties on the fifth day of rescue operations to rescue people taking shelter in various locations of the district.
