Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has responded to Anurag Kashyap’s recent “jhoota aadmi” (liar) comment, opening up about their long-standing professional differences. Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, Vivek acknowledged Anurag’s immense contribution to Indian cinema but maintained that his earlier remarks about Kashyap’s drinking habits were true.

“Usko chhodo. Woh raat mein kya bolta hai, subah kya bolta hai, dono mein farak hai… Yes, I had talked about his drinking habits, and that’s the truth. But I never said Anurag is a bad guy — he is a wonderful guy,” Vivek stated. He praised Anurag’s creative legacy, calling him irreplaceable and a pivotal figure in the history of Indian cinema.

‘My Film Suffered Because of His Alcoholism’

The war of words reignited after Anurag publicly labelled Vivek a liar on social media, reopening wounds from their fallout during the making of Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. The film, featuring John Abraham, Arshad Warsi, and Bipasha Basu, reportedly faced production issues that Vivek attributes to Anurag’s drinking at the time.

“But my film suffered because of his alcoholism. What’s wrong with that? I used to drink a lot during a time period in my life and suffered at work because of it. It happens,” Vivek explained. He also reiterated his claim that Anurag handed over his work to Vikramaditya Motwane, suggesting those involved in the project could confirm it.

Vivek’s Next Film: The Bengal Files

Moving forward, Vivek is focused on his upcoming project, The Bengal Files. Following the massive success and controversy of The Kashmir Files, this film aims to explore West Bengal’s history of political violence and ideological conflict. The cast includes Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, and Darshan Kumar in key roles.

While the filmmaker and Anurag may remain at odds over past incidents, both continue to shape Indian cinema in their own distinct ways, one through politically charged narratives and the other through gritty, genre-defying storytelling.
