UIDAI Chairman Neelkanth Mishra announced the launch at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai during a session on digital identity.
The new SDK will allow partner institutions to run Aadhaar authentication locally on their own servers instead of sending every request through UIDAI’s central systems, Mishra said. This would allow institutions to manage the authentication process within their own infrastructure while reducing exposure to UIDAI’s central systems.
The move is also aimed at addressing geofencing restrictions that have limited the use of Aadhaar authentication outside India.
Removing those restrictions entirely, however, could expose UIDAI’s critical infrastructure to greater security risks, Mishra said.
“The problem with removing geofencing is, then you are vulnerable. It’s critical infrastructure,” Mishra said, adding that UIDAI sees hundreds of attacks every day and has safeguards in place.
Aadhaar authentication has grown sharply in recent years. Daily transactions have risen from around 7 crore a few years ago to about 10 crore currently, Mishra said. UIDAI is preparing its infrastructure to handle as many as 25 crore to 30 crore authentications a day.
More than 600 entities currently use the Aadhaar platform, while downloads of the Aadhaar app are nearing 6 crore.Mishra said the Telangana Police is encouraging the use of the Aadhaar app for several verification processes, which has helped drive adoption.
UIDAI’s broader goal, Mishra said, is to provide secure access to the identity data of 1.44 billion people while operating as largely invisible digital infrastructure.
“Aadhaar is only a database. We make sure that we are very good at what we do, but we also don’t want any scoping,” Mishra said, describing the ambition as becoming infrastructure “that no one knows”.
Jitendra Gupta, founder and chief executive of Jupiter, said Aadhaar has been “one of the biggest boons for the fintech industry”, helping reduce friction in customer onboarding and making it easier for financial companies to offer digital-first services.
