Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the NDA’s performance in Maharashtra’s municipal corporation elections, saying the results reflected growing public support for the alliance’s agenda of “pro-people good governance”.

“Thank you Maharashtra! The dynamic people of the state bless the NDA’s agenda of pro-people good governance,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X, adding that the results of various civic polls indicated that the NDA’s bond with the people of Maharashtra had “further deepened”.

PM Modi said the alliance’s track record and vision for development had struck a chord with voters. “My gratitude to the people across Maharashtra. This is a vote to add momentum to progress and celebrate the glorious culture the state is associated with,” he said.

In a separate post, the Prime Minister praised NDA workers for their efforts on the ground during the campaign. “I am very proud of every NDA karyakarta who worked tirelessly among people across Maharashtra. They talked about our alliance’s track record, highlighted our vision for the coming times and also effectively countered the lies of the Opposition. My best wishes to them,” he said.

BJP breaks Sena dominance in Mumbai, surges elsewhere

The Prime Minister’s remarks came as counting trends indicated a strong showing by the BJP-led alliance across key urban centres in Maharashtra.

In Mumbai, the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single largest party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, breaking the nearly three-decade-old dominance of the undivided Shiv Sena in India’s richest civic body. The BJP-led alliance was set to win around 125 of the 227 seats in the BMC, whose budget for 2025–26 stands at Rs 74,427 crore.

Coupled with a strong performance by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, the BJP is now in a commanding position to govern the cash-rich civic body.

The high-stakes BMC contest had seen the Thackeray cousins reunite after two decades, but early results suggested their efforts failed to stem the BJP’s advance.

In Pune and neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad, the BJP also surged ahead, moving towards a massive victory and leaving the alliance of rival Nationalist Congress Party factions trailing.

Other cities and broader trends

In Nagpur, home turf of Chief Minister Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari, trends suggested the BJP was on course to surpass its 2017 tally of 108 seats in the 151-member Nagpur Municipal Corporation, with the Congress struggling to make major gains.

The Congress, however, registered a notable victory in Latur, winning a clear majority in the 70-member municipal corporation and pushing the BJP to second place.

Elections to 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra were held on January 15 after a gap of several years, with counting underway on Friday. These included key urban centres such as Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad and others across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and beyond.
