Ahead of West Bengal assembly elections, Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Mausam Noor on Saturday returned to the Congress. The move has marked a significant development in Malda’s political landscape. As political temperature is rising in Bengal, “Mausam” also planned to shift.

As per the sources, she had expected to be appointed district TMC President but was not given either the presidency or the district chairperson’s post. She was also not included in the party’s core committee and was dissatisfied with her role as a coordinator, prompting her decision to return to the Congress.

On joining Congress, Noor said, “I thank the Congress party for giving me the opportunity to work with them again… I have already resigned from the Trinamool Congress. I have submitted my resignation to Trinamool Congress Chairperson Mamata Didi, and I will also be resigning from the Rajya Sabha on Monday. So, from today, I have joined the Congress, and I will work very hard to strengthen the party because the people of Bengal, the people of Malda, believe in the Congress, they believe in the Congress’s ideologies of secularism, development, and peace…”

Mausam’s return is seen as a setback for the Trinamool Congress in Malda district. Given her lineage as a member of the Ghani Khan Choudhury family, she is expected to draw a section of the traditional Congress vote. Malda remains one of the few districts in Bengal where the Congress still retains a residual vote base.

Mausam was accompanied by her cousin Isha Khan at the Congress headquarters in Delhi during the joining ceremony. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh and West Bengal Congress president Shubhankar Sarkar were present.

Mausam Noor entered active politics in 2009. The niece of veteran Congress leader Ghani Khan Choudhury, she won the Sujapur Assembly by-election in January that year on a Congress ticket. The seat had fallen vacant following the death of her mother, Ruby Noor. Mausam contested from her mother’s constituency and won.

Later the same year, the Congress fielded her from the North Malda Lok Sabha constituency in the general elections. She won and entered Parliament, and was re-elected from North Malda in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. After Rahul Gandhi became Congress president, Mausam was appointed President of the Malda district Congress.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she contested on a Trinamool Congress ticket but lost. Subsequently, on 3 April 2020, the Trinamool Congress nominated her to the Rajya Sabha.
