Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MLA Rohit Pawar on Monday said that the reunification of the Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar factions for the Pune civic polls was driven by the views and consensus of party workers.

After finalising their alliance for the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation elections, the uncle-nephew duo has now joined hands for the Pune civic polls as well, Rohit Pawar announced.

He clarified that both parties will contest the elections on their respective symbols. He also emphasised that NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar was not directly involved in the decision-making process.

“After speaking with all the party workers, Supriya Sule herself also interacted with the workers from Pune. Subsequently, discussions were held with workers from Pimpri-Chinchwad. This is a fight of the workers and their election. Therefore, after listening to their views and understanding their concerns, it was decided that both NCP factions will contest the polls together in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. However, both parties will contest on their respective symbols,” Rohit Pawar told reporters.

He added that the decision was taken only for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, with full consent of the local workers.

“Such senior leaders have never directly participated in municipal corporation elections… The views of those who fought for us should be heard and understood, and that decisions should be taken in accordance with what the workers decide,” he said.

Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will hold municipal elections on January 15, 2026, alongside 27 other civic bodies in Maharashtra. A seat-sharing formula has been agreed upon, though details were not disclosed.

The move brings the rival NCP factions together after their bitter 2023 split, which saw Ajit Pawar join the BJP-led NDA government. Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad remain politically crucial for the Pawars, with several IT and industrial units located in these jurisdictions. Meanwhile, the BJP and Shiv Sena have yet to announce a formal alliance for the elections in these civic bodies.
