Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has found himself at the centre of a political controversy following remarks he made questioning the multiplicity of Hindu deities.

His comments, made at a public event, have been widely condemned by the opposition, with both the BJP and BRS demanding a formal apology.

Reddy, addressing the audience, raised the question, “How many gods do Hindus believe in? Are there three crore? Why do so many exist?” He then proceeded to make a series of remarks.

“There is one god for those who are unmarried — Hanuman. There is another god for those who marry twice. And there is yet another god for those who drink alcohol. For hen sacrifice, there is one; for dal and rice, there is one. Each group has its own god,” the Telangana Chief Minister added.

The comments quickly sparked outrage from multiple political quarters. The BJP Telangana strongly condemned Reddy’s statements, with party leaders accusing him of “spewing venom against Hindu deities and exposing the Congress party’s inherent Hinduphobic DNA.”

A statement from the BJP called the remarks as “deliberate, targeted insult aimed at deriding Hindu traditions and humiliating devotees.”

“This is not a joke,” the BJP statement read. “This is not a slip of the tongue… This is the true face of Congress: Mock Hindus, malign their beliefs, and manufacture division for political gain.”

Rakesh Reddy Anugula of the BRS also slammed Reddy for mocking Hindu deities, calling it “unfortunate” for someone in such a high office.

Condemning Reddy’s statements, he wrote: “Mocking Hindu gods has become a fashion for every single one. Being at the level of a Chief Minister and speaking in a way that hurts the sentiments of crores of Hindu.”

Anugula demanded that Reddy explain his comments and apologise to the Hindu community. “He must explain to the people. Holding the position of Chief Minister and speaking inappropriately about Hindu deities, thereby insulting them, Revanth Reddy garu should immediately apologize to the Hindu community.”
