The BJP on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Congress MP Renuka Choudhary after she claimed that Army leaders were being pressured to publicly support the government. Speaking in Delhi, Choudhary said, “…The most frightening situation is that, for the first time, Army leaders are coming out and saying that they are being pressured to speak in support of the government…” Her remarks immediately triggered a political confrontation.

BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan condemned her comments, calling them an assault on the dignity of India’s armed forces. “These deeply divisive & malicious remarks of Congress MP Smt. Renuka Choudhary demeaning the dignity of our valiant armed forces is most condemnable,” he said. Kesavan accused the Congress of having a “Sena Virodhi mentality”, alleging that senior party leaders have a history of insulting the military.

He cited several past instances to back his charge. “In the past Congress leaders have humiliated the Chief of Armed forces with pejoratives like Sadak Ka Goonda,” he said, adding that “unpatriotic Congress leaders have repeatedly questioned the credibility of surgical strikes, Balakot air strikes and #OperationSindoor.” Kesavan also recalled that Rahul Gandhi was “reprimanded by the Court” for using the word pitaai in reference to the Army, saying the court had noted that “no true Indian would say such things.”

“For our Armed forces, people and national interest comes first and foremost,” Kesavan said, demanding an apology from the Congress MP. “Smt. Renuka Choudhary should immediately apologise to our brave Armed forces for these repulsive remarks politicising their selfless sacrifice and valour.”

The Congress has yet to issue a formal response to the BJP’s statement, but Choudhary’s comments have already added a new flashpoint to the ongoing political battle over the independence of the armed forces and the alleged politicisation of national security.

BJP Reacts To Renuka’s Dog Comments

The BJP on Tuesday hit out at Congress MP Renuka Choudhary after her remarks comparing MPs to dogs triggered an unexpected controversy in Parliament. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said the language used by Choudhary was unbecoming of a parliamentarian. “The manner in which Renuka ji has responded (on dog comments)… I won’t repeat those words. Congress MPs are using such language,” he said.

Patra also criticised Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for his remarks when asked about the incident. “Today RG, who is LoP, was asked — he said, ‘Did dog come till here? Is it not allowed?’

He said ‘andar toh allowed hai’, pointing towards Parliament,” Patra recounted. “We did not expect this from RG… I hope he goes home and listens to his own and Renuka’s byte. With this kind of speech and behaviour, will the nation respect you?”

The row erupted after Renuka Choudhary arrived for the first day of the Winter Session with a puppy in her arms, prompting surprise and prompting questions about parliamentary protocol. Choudhary later sent the dog back in her car, but before doing so, she remarked, “Those who bite are inside Parliament,” a quip the BJP said insulted the dignity of the House.

Choudhary defended her actions, claiming she had adopted the puppy on her way to Parliament and questioning whether any rule barred an MP from bringing a dog to the premises.

The brief appearance of the animal, and Choudhary’s comments, quickly sparked political sparring between the ruling BJP and the Congress.
