The Nitish Kumar–led Bihar government has asked former Chief Minister Rabri Devi to vacate her long-time official residence at 10 Circular Road after nearly two decades, reallocating her accommodation to House No. 39 on Harding Road. Her son, Tej Pratap Yadav, has also been directed to vacate his 26 M Strand Road residence, which has now been allotted to SC/ST Welfare Minister Lakhendra Kumar Roshan.

The decision has triggered sharp political reactions, with RJD leaders accusing the state government of deliberately targeting the family of party supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav. Rabri Devi’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, hit out at the ruling coalition, claiming that “insulting Lalu Prasad Yadav is the top priority” of the current administration.

In a post on X, Acharya wrote that Nitish Kumar may “remove Lalu from a government house, but cannot remove him from the hearts of Bihar’s people,” urging the state to at least recognise her father’s political stature. The Bihar Building Construction Department issued the revised allotment order on Tuesday, shifting Rabri Devi—currently Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council—from her long-standing residence at Circular Road to Harding Road.

RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav also criticised the move, calling it “surprising” and alleging that BJP’s influence over the state government had increased. Yadav questioned the “rules” governing the change of Rabri Devi’s residence, noting her status as both a former Chief Minister and the current Opposition Leader in the Council.

Rabri Devi, who served as Bihar’s first woman Chief Minister from 1997 to 2005, assumed office after Lalu Prasad Yadav stepped down when an arrest warrant was issued against him in the fodder scam. She has held the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council since 2018.
