Union minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of West Bengal’s electoral rolls in order to shield what he claimed were “crores of unauthorised voters.”

Addressing a large crowd at the BJP’s Parivartan Yatra in Mohanpur, Paschim Medinipur, Majumdar said that the people of Bengal had “already decided to throw out” the Mamata Banerjee-led government. He claimed that the SIR exercise had been “welcomed” by all “bonafide citizens,” but was being resisted only by TMC leaders.

“Why are they opposing it?” he asked, alleging that many unauthorised voters had infiltrated the country and obtained ration cards and Aadhaar documents “with the help of TMC leaders.” The deletion of such names from the voter rolls, he said, had rattled the ruling party.

Majumdar, a former Bengal BJP president, further asserted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s vote bank had “drastically reduced” and predicted that “no one can save her party from a poll debacle” in the coming months. He added that the people of the state wanted ‘parivartan’ (change) and that the BJP would deliver it.

He also said that Bengal’s residents would “reply democratically” to alleged instances of TMC leaders committing atrocities against BJP workers.

The TMC has sharply criticised the Election Commission’s SIR exercise, calling it an attempt at “silent vote rigging.”

Party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP and the Centre of trying to win elections using “notes, not votes,” and alleged that the SIR was being used to brand Bengali migrants as Bangladeshis.

Banerjee also questioned the timeline set for the revision process and flagged threats faced by booth-level officers during enumeration.

BJP National Spokesperson, Pradeep Bhandari joined in the criticism by posting a video on X in which he wrote, “Her vote bank survives on infiltrators — that’s why she is desperate to block SIR.” and claimed that a fake Aadhaar and voter card racket was ‘nurtured’ by the Bengal CM.
