Former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya announced that she had quit politics and cut ties with her family and their party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), blaming her brother Tejashwi Yadav and his close aides, Sanjay Yadav and Rameez.

Acharya’s decision brought the spotlight on the acrimonious Yadav family feud, months after Tej Pratap Yadav was disowned from the family and expelled from the party after his 12-year-old relationship with Anushka Yadav was revealed. After Acharya broke ties with the family, an old remark by Tej Pratap has gone viral on social media.

“Whoever insults our sister, the divine Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Krishna will strike them,” Tej Pratap told reporters on September 20, after a series of controversial posts from Acharya. His remarks came after Acharya expressed her displeasure against Sanjay Yadav by resharing a post, which criticised him for being in the front seat on the campaign bus during the RJD’s Bihar Adhikar Yatra. That post sparked speculations of a rift within the Yadav family and drew family criticism.

Speaking in support of his sister at that time, Tej Pratap said, “Rohini is much older than me. As a child, I have played in her lap. The sacrifice she had made is hard for any daughter, sister or mother. The anguish she has expressed is justified.”

“As a mother, as a sister, the admirable work she has done is something hardly any daughter or any mother could do. For us and for everyone, she is worthy of reverence, and her deeds will always be remembered,” he added.

‘Filthy Abuses, Slippers Raised’

On Saturday, Acharya made a series of shocking claims on X, saying she was humiliated, including abusive language, an attempt to assault her with a slipper and her kidney being called “dirty”.

“Yesterday, a daughter, a sister, a married woman, a mother was humiliated, filthy abuses were hurled at her, a slipper was raised to hit her. I did not compromise on my self-respect, I did not surrender the truth, and solely because of this, I had to endure this insult,” she said.

In another post, she said, “I was cursed at and told that I am dirty, and that I got my father to have my dirty kidney transplanted into him, took crores of rupees, bought a ticket, and then got that dirty kidney put in… To all the daughters and sisters who are married, I will say that when there’s a son or brother in your maternal home, never, ever save your god-like father; instead, tell your brother, the son of that house, to get his own kidney or that of one of his Haryanvi friends transplanted.”

Acharya, a doctor by qualification, settled with her husband in Singapore. She had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections. Her decision to break ties with her family came after the RJD suffered a major loss in the Bihar Assembly election, finishing the election as the third-largest party with just 25 seats, despite contesting on more than 140 seats.

“I am quitting politics and I am disowning my family…This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do…and I am taking all the blame,” she wrote in her post,” she said.

Her brother, Tej Pratap, was expelled from both the party and his family earlier this year following a controversy over his personal life. He went on to launch his own party, the Janshakti Janta Dal (JJD) and contested from Mahua Assembly constituency, where he finished a distant third. Tej Pratap, too, had called Sanjay Yadav a “Jaichand” (betrayer).

NDA Reacts To Acharya’s Decision

Reacting to the family feud, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Malviya said, “Rohini Acharya donated her kidney to her father Lalu Prasad without caring for her own life, so that his life could be extended by some time. But Lalu gave more preference to his son Tejashwi than to the honor of his daughter Rohini. Today, Rohini Acharya is publicly saying that she was even beaten with slippers in the family.”

“This is the real face of the patriarchal, anti-woman, and male-dominated mentality of the Lalu family. It is also inappropriate to expect respect for women from them,” he added.

BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy on Saturday said the Rashtriya Janata Dal is disintegrating. “This is their family matter. It is possible that she is feeling some disappointment. I think that RJD is disintegrating, and the signs are not good,” he said.

Union Minister and LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan refrained from commenting, saying he understood the mental status of a family in such a situation. “We might have had political differences but I have always considered Lalu ji’s family my own. Be it Tejashwi, Tej, Misa or Rohini, I have considered them my siblings. So, I pray that this family dispute is resolved at the earliest. If there is unity in the family, a person can fight tough situations outside,” he said.
