A political controversy has erupted in Assam after a Congress member, Vidhu Bhushan Das,  sang Bangladesh’s national anthem, Amar Sonar Bangla, during a party meeting in Sribhumi on October 27. The incident occurred during an executive meeting of the Congress Sevadal, organised by the party’s Sribhumi District Committee at Indira Bhavan.

Sribhumi, which shares a border with Bangladesh, has a significant Bengali-speaking population. However, the incident has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, which accused the Congress of engaging in appeasement politics.

BJP MLA Krishnendu Paul condemned the act, alleging that the Congress “always has sympathy for Bangladesh and Bangladeshis.”

Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal shared the video showing Das singing the anthem on X. In a post on X, he wrote, “Bangladesh’s national anthem “Amar Sonar Bangla” sung at a Congress meeting in Sribhumi, Assam – the same country that wants to separate the Northeast from India! Now it’s clear why Congress, for decades, allowed and encouraged illegal Miya infiltration into Assam – to change the state’s demography for vote-bank politics creating a “Greater Bangladesh.”

The Assam BJP questioned whether this was a coincidence or an attempt to appease the Bangladesh-origin Muslim vote bank ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, pointing out that it comes amid Dhaka’s controversial map claiming parts of Northeast India.

“Bangladesh government intends to include Northeast in their imaginary map and Congress leaders sing Bangladeshi anthems, it is an issue which needs to be answered by the grand old party,” the state BJP said in a statement.

“The signs couldn’t be louder. Just days ago Bangladesh dared to publish a map swallowing the entire Northeast and now the Bangladesh-obsessed Congress is proudly singing Bangladesh’s national anthem right here in Assam.

If after this someone still can’t see the agenda at play, then they’re either blind, complicit or both,” BJP’s Assam unit tweeted.

The Congress has not issued an official clarification, but the incident has triggered a fresh political row in the state.
