In his second meeting after being sworn in as the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Vice President of India CP Radhakrishnan met with floor leaders of various political parties in Parliament on Tuesday. He thanked all the leaders for attending the meeting and emphasised the need for collective efforts to ensure the smooth functioning of the house. He conveyed that a “Lakshman Rekha” must be drawn to ensure ample space for debate and discussion.

The Rajya Sabha Chairman assured that all voices and opinions in a democracy matter and would be considered. He encouraged members to participate in important matters, especially those of public concern, through zero hours and special mentions.

Opposition parties raised concerns about not having adequate opportunities to express their reservations. They requested the Vice President to consider their suggestions and provide ample time for them to voice their opinions. They highlighted that during the last session, their notices were rejected by the chair, leaving them feeling unrepresented. Smaller parties also expressed concern about the limited time they were given to speak on issues, despite representing the people. The opposition pointed out that bills were being passed hastily without proper discussion, despite their strong objections.

On behalf of the government, Rajya Sabha Leader of the House JP Nadda assured that the government was not avoiding any discussion or debate and that everyone’s concerns were being considered. Nadda elaborated that Parliament functions based on certain rules that apply to everyone.

Government representatives, including Parliamentary Affairs Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and L Murugan, attended the meeting. BJP President JP Nadda was present, along with Congress representatives Jairam Ramesh and Pramod Tiwari, TMC’s Sagarika Ghosh, DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, Shiv Sena’s Milind Deora, actor-politician Kamal Haasan, Sanjay Singh from the Aam Aadmi Party, A Rama Reddy from YSRCP, Sana Satish from TDP, GK Vasan, John Brittas from CPM, Fouzia Khan from NCP-SP, and Sasmit Patra from BJD.

In a lighthearted manner, while addressing the opposition leaders, the Vice President mentioned that he was making his maiden speech and hoped it would not be disrupted.

Opposition parties raised the issue that during question hour, ministers’ responses tend to be political rather than addressing the subject at hand. They requested the Chairman to ensure more precise and relevant responses.

Several members also voiced concerns about private members’ bills being scheduled on Fridays, which often get adjourned early in the morning before the weekend. They suggested that private members’ bills could be taken up on any day and should be encouraged, as they bring many good suggestions that could benefit the government.
