Shah Rukh Khan, fondly known as the King of Bollywood, is not only one of India’s biggest stars but also a global icon. With his charming smile, iconic pose with arms wide open, and magnetic screen presence, he has captured the hearts of millions for more than three decades now. Yet, despite his enduring fame, not everyone around the world is familiar with him. That’s why actor-comedian Vir Das took the matter into his own hands.

During his appearance on actor-comedian Hasan Minhaj’s YouTube show, Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know, Vir Das took it upon himself to introduce Shah Rukh Khan to the American people. The host admitted that, despite numerous discussions, he had failed to draw the right analogy to explain who the Indian superstar is. That’s when Vir stepped in and started his explanation with an anecdote.

Vir Das Recalls Working With Shah Rukh Khan

“Two years into coming to Mumbai as a young comic, I get invited to Shah Rukh Khan’s house to write the Filmfare awards,” he said, sharing that he went into the actor’s sea-facing bungalow, Mannat. He spoke about the grandeur of the place, sharing that the study was adorned with wooden panels and featured a wooden ceiling.

Vir Das mentioned, “I’d written some jokes that were terribly immature, but he kind of sat with me for three nights, and he’s like, ‘Alright, young blood, what do you have?’” The comedian revealed that SRK fed them and even played video games with them. For him, the Baazigar actor is “really a cool, cool guy.”

He added, “When we write words, you expect somebody to just kind of ‘Please just say it like I wrote it in my head’. He’s the only guy I’ve seen who will change it, and it’s just better because it’s him. So, he understands a joke. He knows his way around a joke. He understands a misdirect. He understands a pause. All of that stuff, and he makes it better.” The host was truly impressed with SRK’s approach to work.

Vir Das Shares Shah Rukh Khan Has The Ability To Make A Crowd Gasp When He Walks In

Further, the comedian shared, “I think what encapsulates him is he showed up in Mumbai with one suitcase from Delhi, looked out at the sea and said I’m going to be the king of this city and then did and bought the house by the sea. And he makes you believe it could happen for you, too. But at the end of the day, even if it doesn’t, you’re just glad it happened for him. I think that’s Shah Rukh Khan.” Vir Das also mentioned that when SRK enters, “you feel the room move when he walks in.”

Hasan Minhaj shared that he had previously tried to explain the stardom of SRK to the Americans, saying, “He’s the movies.” He added, “I couldn’t even use Tom Cruise as an analogy. I’m like he is as foundational to cinema as the opening credits are. Like he’s in the DNA code of it.” To this, Vir Das said that when the Mission Impossible actor enters, the crowd goes “Oh my God, Tom!” But when SRK walks in, the crowd would only gasp while looking at him.
