A similar National Lok Adalat will be organised by the Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority in Mumbai and other cities of the state.
Serving as an alternate dispute resolution mechanism, the National Lok Adalat will be held at the Delhi High Court, all Delhi district courts and tribunals aimed at debt recovery. It will also be operational at Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, district consumer disputes redressal commissions and permanent Lok Adalats established in India. The Lok Adalat will be active from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Cases You Can Settle In National Lok Adalat
According to the Delhi State Legal Services Authority, the Lok Adalat aims to ensure the earliest and smoothest possible resolution of disputes, including speedy disposals, timely settlements and court fee refunds. The decisions passed by the judge shall be final and binding on all the parties involved in the dispute. It can’t be appealed against at any Court.
In an official notice, Delhi State Legal Services Authority disclosed the categories of cases that will be taken up at the National Lok Adalat. The list includes criminal compoundable offences, cheque dishonour cases under Section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act, money recovery cases, motor accident claims cases (MACT), as well as labour dispute cases, electricity and water bill cases.
The Lok Adalat will also hear and resolve cases concerning matrimonial disputes (except divorce), land acquisition cases, service matters relating to pay, allowances and retiral benefits, revenue cases pending in district courts and high courts only, other civil cases and compoundable traffic challans.
Traffic Challans At National Lok Adalat
The National Lok Adalat will resolve cases concerning the compoundable challans and notices pending till May 31, 2025, in the virtual courts. The challan slip can be downloaded by the litigants on Lok Adalat’s official website (https://traffic.delhipolice.gov.in/notice/lokadalat).
A maximum of 60,000 challans/notices can be downloaded per day from 10 AM on September 8, 2025, onwards. The authorities have set an overall limit of 1.8 lakh challans on the website.
When ET Wealth Online reached out to lawyers who got relief for themselves or their client from payment of Delhi Police traffic challans in the past, one of them highlighted receiving a waiver of 75 per cent.
“In the last Lok Adalat, I had represented myself before the Delhi Lok Adalat in respect of a traffic challan issued to me for “No PUC” (absence of a valid Pollution Under Control certificate). The challan carried a statutory penalty of Rs 10,000. I appeared in person before the Lok Adalat on the date fixed and submitted my representation, explaining the circumstances and producing the updated PUC certificate. The Lok Adalat considered the representation and the fact that this was a first-time lapse,” said Neha Khanduri, Associate Partner, Singhania & Co.
“The Lok Adalat was pleased to order a settlement of the matter upon payment of Rs 2,500, thereby reducing the challan amount by 75%. Upon making the payment, the case was treated as closed.”
