Following his election as India’s 15th Vice President on Tuesday, CP Radhakrishnan wasted no time in framing his victory as a powerful ideological statement. In his first remarks to the media, the Vice President-elect asserted that the election had been a battle of ideologies and that the voting pattern demonstrated that “nationalistic ideology is overall victorious”.
Radhakrishnan’s decisive win, with a final vote count of 452 against opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy’s 300, provides a clear numerical backing to his claim of a mandate. The victory margin of 152 votes in an electoral college of 767 MPs underscores the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) strong parliamentary position. This was in contrast to the opposition’s INDIA bloc, which, despite framing the contest as an “ideological battle,” fell short of its expected vote count.
The victory also marks a significant milestone in Radhakrishnan’s long political career, which is deeply rooted in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP. A two-time Member of Parliament from Coimbatore and a former state president of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, he has consistently championed a nationalist agenda. Before his election, he served as the governor of Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
His victory is being seen by the ruling side as a confirmation of its growing ideological and political dominance, as it secures the country’s second-highest constitutional office. In his comments, he also emphasised the need to move beyond politics and focus on development to achieve the goal of a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.
