Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar indulged in a heated argument with a woman IPS officer, Anjali Krishna, triggering a controversy in the state, with his party NCP defending it as his “usual way of speaking with anybody” and the Opposition criticising the turn of events.

“Suno, mai deputy chief minister bol raha hu aur aapko aadesh deta hu ki vo rokwao (Listen, I am the deputy chief minister and giving you the order to stop it). “How dare you? I will take action against you. You will at least recognise my face, won’t you?” Pawar was heard telling the police officer over a phone call – the video of which has gone viral.

NCP MP Sunil Tatkare said that the Deputy CM called the police officer for “public work” and did not threaten her.

“What is wrong when a DCM is calling an officer for a common public work? The same thing happens in the Janta Darbar as well, where leaders and ministers call officers directly. I have known Dada for over 40 years, and I can say with full confidence that his tone may be harsh, he may be louder, as it’s his usual way of speaking with anyone, but there is nothing like threatening that lady officer. That issue is over, as per my view,” he said.

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale said that Pawar spoke in this manner as he was not aware that the individual on the other side of the call was an officer.

“I think Ajit Pawar is a very strong leader and a good administrator. He later talked about what happened. He did that mistakenly because he did not know she was an officer. He also admitted that what he did was not right. So this is not a matter of dispute,” he said.

Shiv Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut said that the incident took place as the woman officer attempted to stop the illegal mining taking place in her area. He further demanded protection for a young IPS officer in the country.

“This entire issue involves illegal mining. A young IPS officer, Anjali Krushna, stopped the entire illegal mining operation in her area because it was causing a loss to the government treasury. She received complaints from the local people and managed to halt the work. Afterwards, the Deputy CM of Maharashtra threatened her over the phone, telling her that the people involved in that work are from his party and she must protect them. The woman officer replied that she would not engage in any illegal activity. Consequently, Ajit Pawar warned not to mess with him. This is what Ajit Pawar said… This clearly reflects the state of Maharashtra. I appeal to the Home Minister of this country to give protection to a young IPS officer,” he said.

Pawar reportedly joined a video call to speak directly with the officer and asked her to stop action against the illegal excavation of murum (red soil), which is commonly used in road construction as a base and filling material.

The incident happened in Kurdu village of Solapur district, where officer Krishna had gone to inspect illegal murum digging linked to a road project.

NCP worker Baba Jagtap called Deputy CM Ajit Pawar during the visit and gave the phone to Krishna, which led to the situation escalating. The on-site inspection also saw heated arguments between villagers and officials, and the entire episode was caught on camera.
