As per a statement by the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Indian forces are locked in multiple ongoing face-offs with the Chinese army along the Arunachal border. The state is also witnessing violent protests against the proposed 11,200-MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), which the government sees as critical to India’s strategic and water security amid China’s massive hydropower push upstream in Tibet.
The proposed dam aims to generate power and create a major water-storage buffer to help regulate river flows and moderate floods, with the urgency stemming from China’s 60,000-MW hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo, the river that enters India as the Siang before flowing into the Brahmaputra.
The 3-day event organized by India’s Union Ministry of Tourism will also feature a Regional Meeting of Tourism Ministers of the Northeastern States on 30th October to discuss strengthening of tourism development in the region with enhanced cooperation among states.
The 14th edition of the International Tourism Mart marks its return to Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, after 13 years, with it having last hosted the 2nd edition in 2013. The previous edition of the Mart was held in Gangtok in Sikkim in November 2025.
