Joggers at the airport. Track pants at brunch. Sneakers with absolutely everything. If brand pitches are to be believed, India has officially broken up with jeans. Then the actual data walks in and asks for receipts.
That data comes from a consumer study by the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) and research firm *Lattice. It sizes India’s apparel market at $**.* billion in **** and hands sportswear roughly * per cent of it.
CMAI’s own report flags athleisure as a key growth segment for menswear, yet the numbers stay small. The study counts track pants, gym and yoga wear suits and lowers as sportswear, whilst T-shirts sit under casualwear.
