Mumbai local trains: 10 suburban services upgraded to 15-car rakes; check routes and timings

The move is aimed at easing crowding by increasing the passenger-carrying capacity of these trains by around 25%. Confirming the development on X, Central Railway said, “Comfort now upgraded to 15 coaches! Central Railway has upgraded selected suburban services from 12-car to 15-car, making everyday travel better for millions of commuters.”

With the latest upgrade, the total number of 15-car suburban services on Central Railway has increased to 32, Dr Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railway, told The Indian Express.
Meanwhile, the overall number of suburban services will remain unchanged at 1,820.

According to Nila, all 10 upgraded train services will operate on the Main Line from today. “These services will run on the CSMT-Karjat South East line and will immensely benefit passengers travelling to and from Ambarnath/Badlapur / Karjat. This upgradation of three additional coaches per service, will enhance the carrying capacity of each service by 25%,” he told the publication.

The first 15-car services on Central Railway’s Mumbai suburban network were introduced in October 2012 with 16 trains. Six more services were added in March 2019, taking the total to 22 before the latest expansion.
