The next textile boom won’t look like apparel

The textile and apparel sector is entering a decisive margin reset. Basic apparel remains exposed to cautious consumers, volatile sourcing and tariff turbulence, which the BoF-McKinsey State of Fashion **** report calls the industry’s number-one hurdle. In contrast, capital is moving into fabrics that solve problems: performance textiles, antimicrobial finishes, industrial-use materials and smart wearables.

This is not fashion abandoning apparel. It is apparel’s material base moving up the value chain. Commodity garments compete on cost and speed; functional fabrics compete on certification, durability, safety, chemistry and measurable performance. That makes the category stickier, more defensible and harder to replace.
