Yuvraj Singh once revealed he told his parents to divorce as fights made life tough.
Before he became one of India’s most celebrated cricketers, Yuvraj Singh lived through a difficult childhood that he now openly talks about. In an old interview, the former India all-rounder revealed that he was the one who encouraged his parents to separate after years of tension at home. Yuvraj, who shared a strained bond with his father, actor Yograj Singh, said he realised early on that constant fights were affecting everyone in the family, including him.
Yuvraj’s father, Yograj Singh, is a former Indian cricketer who later turned actor, appearing in several Punjabi and Hindi films. Yuvraj Singh has never shied away from discussing his personal struggles. In a candid conversation with Simi Garewal years ago, the 2011 World Cup hero recalled how growing up under the shadow of his father’s ambitions was far from easy.
Talking about his father’s intense nature, Yuvraj shared, “What I heard was that he worked very hard for his game, and he was very talented. He was just very aggressive, and he did things his own way, so it was tough on him. He wanted to see himself through me, and he wanted me to play for India.”
Reflecting on his family life, Yuvraj spoke with gratitude about his mother, Shabnam Singh, who raised him after the separation. “I think only a mother can make the sacrifices that my mom made to bring me up. I am very thankful for having a mother like that,” he said.
The cricketer also shared that it was his decision for his parents to split. “Yeah, I was about 14 or 15 years old, and it was getting tough to be in that kind of an atmosphere where your parents are always fighting. It wasn’t good for me, and I was also playing at the time. I gave them the idea and told them that they should go their separate ways instead of causing such pain for the kids or the people around you,” he revealed.
Yuvraj left with his mother when he was 17, while Yograj later remarried and had two children. In a past chat with SMTV, Yograj had said that he and Yuvraj no longer share a bond because of their differing views on parenting. “The day Yuvi hands his children over to me, they will meet the same fate as he did. You can only forge gold through fire. There will be no mercy, because there is only one path… That’s what they fear, and that’s why we aren’t together,” Yograj had said.
