Twenty-six years ago, a gritty film set in the heartland of Bihar redefined realism in Hindi cinema. Shool, released on November 5, 1999, did not open to packed theatres nor earn blockbuster collections. Made on a budget of around Rs 5 crore, it barely managed to collect Rs 8.5 crore at the box office. Yet today, it stands as one of the most powerful cult films of Hindi cinema, remembered for its unfiltered depiction of crime and politics, stellar performances, and the uneasy silence it left behind in living rooms and private screenings hosted by Bollywood stars. Directed by Ishwar Niwas and produced by Ram Gopal Varma and Nitin Manmohan, Shool was far removed from the song-dance formula dominating the 1990s. Set against the socio-political realities of Bihar, the film narrated the story of an honest police officer, Inspector Samar Pratap Singh, played convincingly by Manoj Bajpaye, who wages a lone battle against a corrupt system controlled by local strongman Bachchu Yadav, portrayed chillingly by Sayaji Shinde. The film’s writing team included Ram Gopal Varma, Ishwar Niwas and a young Anurag Kashyap, who penned the hard-hitting dialogues. Raveena Tandon played Bajpayee’s supportive wife, bringing emotional depth to a narrative drenched in violence and despair. (News18 Hindi)

While the film struggled commercially, it created a stir within the film industry. Actors and filmmakers reportedly requested Ram Gopal Varma to organise private screenings at their homes. Such was the film’s intensity that, during one of these showings at the residence of Jaya Bachchan, the veteran actress reportedly cried out during the scene of a young girl’s death, startling even Amitabh Bachchan, who was completely absorbed in the narrative. Manoj Bajpayee, recalling the film’s emotionally charged hospital scene where his onscreen wife dies, said even crew members and co-star Raveena Tandon were in tears. “Anurag Kashyap hugged me while crying. It took a while for me to come out of the character,” he said. (News18 Hindi)

Shool marked a turning point for many now-celebrated actors. Rajpal Yadav appeared in his first significant film role as a railway porter in a scene filmed before a crowd of nearly 10,000 people in Bettiah, Bihar. Raveena Tandon had to be escorted under tight police protection due to the overwhelming response from onlookers. “Seeing the security, I felt like Indira Gandhi,” she joked later. (News18 Hindi)

Sayaji Shinde, who came from Marathi theatre, delivered one of the most haunting portrayals of a political strongman in Hindi cinema. His character, Bachchu Yadav, remains one of the most feared antagonists in Bollywood history. Even Nawazuddin Siddiqui appeared briefly as a waiter; he was paid Rs 2,500 for the role, an amount he claims he never received. “I survived for weeks eating lunches at Ram Gopal Varma’s office while trying to recover my payment,” he laughed in an interview. Shilpa Shetty featured in a popular item number, ‘Dilwalon Ke Dil Ka Karaar Lootne‘, shot in Bettiah amidst intense public curiosity. The realism was such that when Bajpayee requested an old-style pistol for authenticity, several locals reportedly pulled out actual firearms from under their blankets. (News18 Hindi)

Remarkably, director Ishwar Niwas was just 22, while Anurag Kashyap was 24 when Shool was made. After the success of Satya (1998), this was Ram Gopal Varma’s second major exploration of the political-crime nexus. The climax, four pages long in the script, was rehearsed nearly 50 times by Bajpayee and filmed inside the old Madhya Pradesh Assembly building in Bhopal. (News18 Hindi)

Despite initial commercial failure, Shool went on to win three National Film Awards, including the prestigious National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Over time, it has come to be regarded as a landmark film that reshaped Hindi cinema’s approach to realism, much like Satya did a year earlier. (News18 Hindi)
